Maungatautari history. : ill. They originally lived around Maungatautari in the Waikato. Ngāti Kauwhata is a Māori iwi (tribe) of the Manawatū area of New Zealand. The 797-metre-high (2,615ft) mountain is an extinct stratovolcano. It passed to one of his sons, Joseph Hart Hicks and then to Joseph's son, Richard. Oral History records that he migrated from Maungatautari in the late 16th century and established pā and kāinga in and around the Paeroa township, the Hauraki Plains area, and through the Karangahake Gorge to Waihi township.
